There are books we read in our youth as adventures, but reread in adulthood as parables about the most important things. Chingiz Aitmatov’s “A Piebald Dog Running Along the Edge of the Sea” is precisely such a text.
At the Chekhov Theatre, we’re staging more than just a story about hunters lost in the northern sea. It’s a performance that explores what happens to a person when the familiar world shrinks to the size of a kayak, and all around us lies icy fog and the silence of the elements. In the survival thriller genre, we seek the answer to the question each of us secretly asks ourselves: “Could I survive if I were alone?”
“Survival” in Aitmatov’s world isn’t just about preserving the physical body. It’s about how to preserve the human within when there’s no hope of salvation. A story about continuity, about how grandfathers and fathers enter the Abyss to give a child a chance, and about the responsibility this gift of life imposes.
“A Piebald Dog Running Along the Edge of the Sea” is an honest conversation about sacrifice, about ancestral roots, and about how the shore isn’t a point on a map, but a state of mind. We invite you to join us in searching for the light together.
