Turandot

As one of my mentors used to say, “If you want to stage contemporary performances, go back to the roots, look back.” Our “Turandot” is contemporary because it’s long forgotten… It’s a contemporary take on ancient theatrical traditions. A look back from the present into completely new and unfamiliar forms.

Commedia dell’arte is a forgotten form of Italian folk theater. Although its masks are key to the entire theatrical art, because each actor wears a mask during the performance, invisible to the audience. But in the case of “Turandot,” we make them completely visible. So we say—this is open theater; we have nothing to hide. Improvisation, dexterity, flexibility, and grace combined with the expressiveness of the masks—that’s what our production is all about.
