A man came to a woman

Semyon Zlotnikov’s play “A Man Came to a Woman” was written in the last quarter of the last century and has since been a constant presence on theater stages across the world. Social structures are collapsing, the world is transforming, modern technology is altering our understanding of time and space, yet a keen interest in what happens between men and women, in how the most intimate relationships develop, evolve, and ultimately evolve, remains steadfast. The play’s apparent simplicity is deceptive, and perhaps that’s why attempting to stage the text on various stages proves untenable until one grasps the depth and complexity of the author’s vision, along with the ambiguous characters.
