PRESS RELEASE
On April 17, a working meeting was held between the director of the A. P. Chekhov State Russian Drama Theater, Feodor Gladii, the theater’s artistic director, Vera Mariancik, and film director Roman Kachanov. The result of the meeting was the decision to expand creative directions: the theater opens up space for projects that go beyond the framework of the classical repertoire, turning the stage into a place of lively and informal expression. We are launching a series of meetings during which professionals and creative people speak to the audience without a script and without intermediaries.
On May 14, at 7:00 p.m., this cycle will be opened by two artists whose creative style has long become a recognizable cultural code: film director Roman Kachanov and actor Alexei Gorbunov, People’s Artist of Ukraine.
For many, the name of Roman Kachanov has become a synonym for intellectual freedom. In the early 2000s, his films “DMB” and “Down House” created a new cinematic language — bold, absurd and extremely precise. Kachanov proved that you can be a reference director, remaining outside the system. Today, he arouses the interest of a new audience, being a master who knows how to turn professional chaos into a meaningful artifact and the author of aphorisms that have been living independently, for decades, in the online environment.
The voice of actor Alexei Gorbunov is recognizable from the first second. He has over a hundred roles in his track record, but in each of them he remains organic and authentic. He is equally convincing both in the role of the jester Chicot in “The Countess of Monsoreau” (where he outshone all the main actors), and in the role of the juror in the film “12”. He is appreciated for the fact that he does not mime emotions, but experiences them, doing so without unnecessary acting pathos.
We have titled the evening of the creation of the two masters “Moments, Fragments and Elements”. You will see and hear an analysis of the “internal kitchen” of creation, directly from the source. There will be stories about what usually remains behind the cameras: how films are born that later have their own life and, in general, what happens with cinema and inside it. There will also be presented fragments of favorite films, accompanied by the director’s comments.
We invite you to be part of the new project of the Chekhov Theater!
